Much information is available that pertains to hair turbans. Although one can simply find this information online as well as many different books on cultural diversity. There are many different versions of this headdress and they are commonly a direct representative of their region or religion.

One can find information on the history of the headdress however information before the 14th century may not be available. Much of the early information was not recorded and may pertain to mostly middle east countries. Although this headdress is worn in many different areas like the middle east and Africa, each area will have its own modern version that stems from the cap that was wrapped with cloth.

There are several variations that are available depending on the tribe or purpose in which one decides to wear it. Some are in a cone shape, others are simple, some where them to cover up hair and others yet still may wear them as a sign of religious faith. It is common for one to find that some may be adorned with different embellishments, depending on rank in a religious or military sect. Many are found to wear them at all times except when asleep as a way to completely cover ones hair.

There are several parts of Africa that participate in this custom. It is commonly worn as a symbol of their tribe or origin and can range in color with shades of blue being a common choice. These are simple in construction and are commonly just a few strips of cloth wrapped around the head. There are those however that wear these as a symbol of their dedication to the Christian Faith.

There are parts of the middle east where many are required to wear them all day or else be charged with a crime. Those that observe this believe it is in accordance to their religion. These are worn to cover ones hair and can commonly cover the ears as well. Different areas will also twist beards and tuck inside of the headdress.

There are some regions that reserve them for special occasions such as weddings and religious occasions. These are also commonly used in place of a crown for those in command. It is thought that these observances were out of respect to religion as well as any customs that might be considered.

Many of those in the middle east will were a shade of green. This is in respect to their religion and is a symbol of paradise. However those of devote faith may chose another color with white or black being representative of those high in ranks with the religion of the area.
